Registration Processes for Bachelor and Master Students

As a student enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's course of study, you generally need to register via RWTHonline at the beginning of the semester, or at the very latest by the end of November or May, respectively. Please take note of the deviating deadlines for the 2018/19 winter semester. Please also note that you have to register separately for courses (lecture, seminar, tutorial) and for the associated exams (written exam, seminar paper). Please refer to the RWTHonline documentation portal for instructions. Please be aware that the registration deadlines are not uniform. They can vary among registration processes. Consult your specific exams to see which deadlines apply to you.

The registration deadlines are generally all the same: As soon as your registration has been recorded with the ZPA, you can cancel up to three business days before the exam date or withdraw with a confirmation from the examination board or doctor’s note. Consult your course of study or subject-specific exam regulations or the corresponding general exam regulation, found under Official Announcements, to find out which guidelines apply to your course of study.

Deviating deadlines for exam registration in winter semester 2018/19

In the 2018/19 winter semester, registration for exams begins on December 3, 2018, and ends on January 10, 2019. This does not apply to a small number of exams with earlier registration deadlines, such as those associated with some seminars and practicals for instance. For this reason, we advise students to check the information provided by the faculty or department on a regular basis.


Registration for Repeat Exams During the Same Semester

When there are two dates for an exam during the exam period, you can choose one at the time of registration.
When there are two dates for an exam during the exam period, and you did not pass the exam on the first date or submitted a registration cancellation or doctor's note, you can register for the second date. Registration is open at the beginning of January and end of June for up to seven days before the second exam date. If the examiner did not provide a specific exam date, we ask you to stay informed about any newly added dates.

Registration for Auflagenprüfungen, Early Master's Work, and Exams Within the Framework of Curriculum Changes

Students can register for Auflagenprüfungen (that is, exams for additional requirements), via RWTHonline on their own.

All registrations for Master's academic work that is being completed earlier than scheduled, are to be completed via Curriculum Support in the future. At the moment, however, not all modules in the system are open for student-initiated registration yet. Please check ahead of time whether you can see all the modules that you want to register in Curriculum Support. If you do, go ahead and register for exams on your own via Curriculum Support within the regular registration period (December 3, 2018 to January 10, 2019 for the first date; up to seven days prior the exam for the second date). If you don't see them listed, please contact the ZPA within the in person registration period (January 7 to January 11, 2019) so that any missing modules can be entered and registered.

If students want to register for one or more exams during a change of their course of studies, the decision by the examination board must be presented to the Central Examinations Office, or ZPA, before registration. The responsible ZPA officer will then activate the respective area in the student's Curriculum Support system. After that, you will then be able to register for these exams on your own during the regular registration period.

Students, who are beginning a Bachelor's course of study for the first time as of summer semester 2016, can only complete modules in advance that are 30 CP.

Please note: Modules cannot be completed ahead of time for restricted admission Master's programs. This pertains to Applied Geography, Business Administration, Biotechnology, Teaching and Research Logopedics, Psychology, Sustainable Water and Energy Management, Commercial Geography, and Economics.

Oral Supplemental Exam for Bachelor and Master Students

All of the Bachelor's and Master's exam regulations include provisions for an oral supplemental exam. You can use this if you have taken a written exam for the second time and did not pass. After taking the oral supplemental exam, you can then replace your failed second repeat exam with a grade of 4.0.

Registration Period in Winter Semester 2018/19

Except for a few cases, the in person registration period for exams in the 2018/19 winter semester is scheduled for the period of January 7 to 11, 2019. If registration in person is required for your course of study, register in person in the ZPA during office hours.

  2. In the second tab of the Exam Registration application, you can also actively search for exam dates.

  4. Your examiners can certainly also provide you with information on exam dates.


Representation Through an Authorized Person

If you cannot register yourself personally in ZPA due to an important reason, you can authorize someone to represent you or send your registration via fax or mail to the ZPA. Please remember to sign the registration and include a copy of your student ID.


Registration FAQs

Can I register for or cancel an exam via telephone?

No, you can neither register for nor cancel an exam via telephone. However, depending on the degree and registration guidelines for your course of study, you can register within the respective registration period via RWTHonline.

How do I find out, how and where I need to register for an exam?

Registration procedures can be found in your exam regulations. Normally, your examiner will also share these with you. If neither of these helps you, please contact your departmental advisors.

I've registered for a course (e.g. a lecture or lab) via RWTHonline. Do I also need to separately register via RWTHonline for the exam?

Yes, typically you have to separately register. Registration for a course does not mean that you are automatically registered for an exam.

Where can I check which exams I am registered for?

Log in to RWTHonline as if you were registering for exams. Under the heading "Prüfungsanmeldung" you can see an overview of all the exams you are registered for. Detailed instructions can be found on the pages of the RWTHonline-Dokuportal. You can find further information on the Checking Your Registration page.

Can I repeat an exam which I have already passed in order to improve my grade?

No, this is not permitted in the Bachelor's and Master's courses of study.
