PROGRAM (Insight-Outside)

Faculty of Architecture, RWTH Aachen

Some 25 years after the introduction of the first European exchange program „ERASMUS“ and almost 15 years after the Bologna declaration, the RWTH Aachen University’s Faculty of Architecture compiled curricular data of its 40 partner universities in a compatibility study.

This study is aiming at a presentation of the magnificent diversity in architectural programs, which is enriching the educational and scholarly landscape in Europe and the vast potentials of an European exchange of students and teachers. At the same time the change to the inflexible Bachelor-/Master-system resulted in a decreasing interest of Aachen students to go abroad.

Both, the presentation of the compatibility study as well as the exchange of students within the next years, are the main topics of the workshop “Insight–Outside. ERASMUS: Movement or Stagnation”, to be held in Aachen October 5-8, 2011.

To this end all Aachen partners have been invited to discuss the future of the ERASMUS cooperation. Also there will be an inaugural meeting of the DAAD BachelorPlus program at our Faculty, which is understood as a first investigation into the possibility of extending the standard Bachelor program into a four-years-program with an obligatory foreign component, based on our ERASMUS experience.

Given the increasing globalization also the academic education has to “internationalize”; this is especially due for the architectural profession. To be well prepared for the professional world, the ERASMUS exchange program is a significant asset, not only to get acquainted to “foreign” environments, to new cultures and languages, but also open the academic teaching to our globalized world.

While a national Bachelor degree allows for a succeeding foreign Master degree, there is a larger demand in highly-qualified networks and along with more intensive cooperations and the introduction of double degrees. This development however includes various issues to be solved:

-compatibility of curricular contents

-compatibility of curricular qualities

-capacities of the respective partner universities

-administrative structure of the networks

-quality of degrees with respect to professional licensing

To approach these issues, knowledge about the curricular structure of the according university or faculty is crucial. Aachen’s compatibility study is meant to sharpen and intensify the existing networks and, correspondingly, be a guideline for students and teachers indicating the different qualities of our partners’ programs within the network for a better understanding of the wealth of architectural education in Europe.
