International Symposium 25. - 27.11.2015

The purposeful arrangement and construction of spaces in places is the task of architecture. In the reciprocal relationship between architectural forms and spaces and the external and internal conditions in which they are perceived, especially color as a phenomenon is given a special significance. Due to its dialectical justification as physical fact and psychological occurrence a purely scientific description is just as inadequate as a purely subjective interpretation. The phenomenon color develops an effect as interaction of subject, matter, space, light and time independent of its definition and formation. There are no places without color.

The exploration of this complex mechanism of action as the foundation of designing strategies in all aspect of society can be achieved by including the subjective and by considering numerous viewpoints from different fields of expertise. This consideration resulted in the plan for an interdisciplinary academic symposium "Places of Color". The participants are asked to introduce their contributions with a subjective description of a spatial situation (Places of Color) and to follow up and conclude during the generalized, objective presentation of their respective discipline by formulating information, interpretation and a summary. The 'Place of Color' is only to be looked at superficially -by observation and description- as the designated starting point for a profound examination of the phenomenon color. The description of the color on-site takes places with differing benchmarks of approximation. In doing so a place can be the point on a surface or it can comprise the perceptible cohesion of a landscape. The following can be considered as 'Places of Color': surfaces, substances and materials, things or elements, details like walls, ceilings or panels, openings for windows, doors and niches, rooms, apartments, houses and farms, streets and squares, districts, cities, land and landscapes, in other words: all conceivable, spatial situations.

Only a multitude of international lecturers and authors from different disciplines can make the wide-ranging expertise on color in architecture accessible to architecture and start a discussion on questions regarding the cultural and social, the historical and contemporary, the phenomenological, psychological and neurological, the material and constructive, the theoretical and the creative, artistic and design foundations of color in architecture and put this in the context of a broader research on polychromy in architecture.
