Golden Horn Metro Bridge, Istanbul

I ndependent Assessment of the Visual Impact of the Golden Horn Metro Crossing Bridge on the World Heritage property Historic Areas of Istanbul

The City of Istanbul, Turkey, is planning a new metro overpass bridging the Golden Horn to connect the two European headlands of the city centre. The Metropolitan Municipality of Istanbul commissioned a Visual Impact Assessment Reports (VIAR) to obtain an independent view on whether the realization of the Metro Bridge impairs the Outstanding Universal Values (OUV), the Visual Integrity and the Authenticity of the nearby World Heritage Site “Historic Areas of Istanbul”.

A preliminary report already confirmed that particularly the great Süleymaniye Mosque will be negatively affected by the bridge, therefore a panel of international experts was consulted. They cooperated to explore convenient design alternatives to minimize the negative impact of the bridge.
