Obituary Rudolf Schönwald
The Faculty of Architecture mourns the death of Professor Rudolf Schönwald, born on June 30, 1928 in Hamburg, died on October 14, 2022 in Freiburg.
After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Rudolf Schönwald initially devoted himself to his graphic work. In 1976 he followed the call to the RWTH Aachen University and was there until 1993 professor at the Department of Visual Arts. His artistic oeuvre includes book illustrations, socially committed murals, stage sets and drawing series such as his late major work of industrial drawings of decommissioned industrial plants. For his work he received, among others, the Austrian State Prize for Graphic Arts in 1971 and the City of Vienna Prize for Fine Arts in 1976, as well as the Golden Medal of Merit of the State of Vienna in 1998. With his death, RWTH loses a highly esteemed colleague, inspiring artist and teacher. Our deepest sympathy goes to his family. We will always honor Mr. Schönwald's memory.
