The Chair and Institute of Urban Design is the seat of the former UNESCO Chair in World Cultural and Urban Landscapes headed by Univ.-Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Kunibert Wachten and the UNESCO Chair for Cultural Heritage and Urbanism headed by Univ.-Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Christa Reicher, which was established in January 2023. The UNESCO Chair is thus part of the UNITWIN/UNESCO Chair Program. The Chair's task is to shape the transformation of cities and neighborhoods in a sustainable way, with special attention to cultural heritage. In research and teaching - especially with the master's program "Transforming City Regions" - the Chair wants to dedicate itself to interdisciplinary education and international transformative research.

One of the research areas of the Department of Computer Graphics and Multimedia is the development of methods for the efficient capturing and processing of geometry as well as the interactive and photo-realistic visualization of three-dimensional digital models. The research results are used, among other things, in the context of the conservation of cultural heritage.
