In case of the city of Dortmund as the winner of the „iCapital Award 2021“ and therefore capital of european innovation especially for projects like Masterplan Wissenschaft 2.0, educational institutions play an important role. Due to education as a powerful magnet, universities always provide jobs and a steady growth of population for a city. The project of my Master Thesis „Smart Rhino“ in Dortmund - a new campus at the waterfront for the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Dortmund - is really relevant in this context. Aim of the project was to create a united campus, to further synergies between the different faculties and to give a corporate identity to the university of applied sciences and arts. This corporate identity can also represent the city of Dortmund. Involving the topics of „water“ and „green“ the project is bound to the plans for the Internationale Gartenausstellung, that will take place in 2027 at different spots all over the Ruhrgebiet but with Dortmund as one of the main locations. Because of the position of the site within the intended area of the coming Internationale Gartenausstellung, these two topics will gain a higher meaning. Another important part of the concept is dealing with the remaining buildings and infrastructure at the area of the former HSP. Next to the three buildings, classified as monuments, I decided to also include some more structures into my design. The structure of the former Walzwerk II consists of a base with five meters height, that blends with the rising topography in the northern part of the area, and former buildings of the factory upon this base. These buildings of the factory are demolished by now, but the base is still existing. This base should remain as a „hollowed out“ structure with colonnades. The new campus for the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Dortmund will be developed along, above and between these colonnades.
