Abstract

Close to the development of the building material reinforced concrete in the end of the 19th century the design methods for this new material were develloped. The main technological characteristics and load bearing systems were allready known in the beginning of the 20th century. By dividing the profession of architects and structural engeniers the design methods became more exact and more complicate. The objective of this treatise is to represent the development of the bending and shear design in reinforced concrete and to analyse it critical. The contributions of the developments of practice, science and standards will be worked out in the historical retrospect. To understand the standardized design specifications a theoretical and mathematical knowledge is needed, wich can't be placed in the education of achitects. Approximate design methods for bending and shear design of reinforced concrete will be proposed which are similar in their handling to the approximate methods for wood and steel.
