How could places of work (factories, offices, workshops etc.) change, if millions of people lost der Jobs as result of the digitalization and became dependent on a universal income?

The current crisis as a catalysator of radical changes to the economiv system raises this question which was the starting point of this Master Thesis, even more.

The outcome consists of two parts: first, the theoretical research with the invention of an independent thesis on the siginficance of digitalization for the built environment, and second: the poetical-narrative design which proposes an answer for the supposed stat of the world.

Part I - The World as a Factory

Since the Beginning of the industrial revolution Places of Work have been undergoing constant changes. With this, the architecture of the factory has always been a mirror of the respective epoch, being conditioned by ressources, technology and products.

Today, data is the most important and most trendsetting ressource. By now, its collection and analysis through systems of articificial intellegence are integrated into our daily life almost ubiquitous. The production and processing are carried out by the people themselves by using digital devices as their daily helpers.

Therefore a new form of work has come to life, the socalled unconscious work which does not limit itself to a single location anymore, but takes place anywhere at any time in atomized and phantomized way.

Therefore, the factory of the future is not a single densified place of production, but the whole human-inhabitated world becomes the factory of the 21st century.

Part II – The factory as the World

A possible answer to the uppermentioned findings is being delivererd through a super-scale design. on the basis of the city of Augsburg.

It is a radical, provocatice, poetical and political projection with an ambivalent interplay, offering the possibility to an exit from the all-encompassing factory but at the same time cannot completey withdraw from it.

Thereby it asks as many questions, as it seems to answer. In relation to Hannah Arendts definiton of the human condition and her analysis of public space unfolds the modell of a new, and anew free society.
