The idea of stacked public spaces
The market hall is located in the city centre of Cologne, on the northern edge of the old town and adjoins Roncalliplatz, which is located south of Cologne cathedral. On the north side of the building, there is an unobstructed panorama of Cologne Cathedral, and on the south side, the "Via Culturalis", a cultural axis lined with museums and public buildings in a north-south orientation, adjoins. The market hall can be seen as a prelude to the cultural axis.
The core of the design is formed by three stacked public spaces, which differ in their qualities and each allow a close relationship to their surroundings. The design sees itself as a catalyst of public space, as a magnet for people who are interested in the metabolism of cultural and intellectual goods beyond the exchange of goods and consumption. The building's character is intended to stand as a structural foundation for a resurgent, vibrant city centre.
On the first floor there is an open, freely playable, roofed action space. It will be enlivened by events of both a formal and informal nature throughout the day and week. On the area under the building, which is accessible for vehicles and follows the natural topography, there is the possibility to organize weekly markets, food festivals, fairs, swap and flea markets, music and cultural events as well as exhibitions. The character of this space is changeable and allows spontaneous interaction.
Two wide open staircases, starting under the building and piercing the ceiling, lead to the gallery-like first level. There is the delicacie market hall, which can be opened generously to the north and south, where there are fixed stands, counters and seating. Processed and prepared goods and dishes are sold. The classic market offer is extended by delicacies, specialties, international food and the possibility of tasting.
If you follow the outdoor stairs further up to the roof, you will reach a roof garden, which, in addition to the panoramic view and the view of the cathedral, offers space for relaxation or physical activity.
