Staging a Presentation. On the Past and Present of the Convent-Palace at Kornelimünster

For several years, the Chair of Architectural History has used its series of M2 projects "From Survey to Building Idea" to study the architectural ensemble of the former Imperial Abbey of Kornelimünster. Using the methods of building archaeology, the participants over time have documented and analyzed various parts of both the convent and the associated church of Saint Cornelius and placed each of them in its overarching context.

Following on from a first presentation of research outcomes in the fall of 2019, the Chair and this year’s group of M2 students have now curated the architectural history part of another exhibition, in which, from June 3 onwards, the kunsthaus nrw currently occupying the ensemble commemorates the three-hundredth anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone for the new convent wings in 1721. In it, three displays on the upper floor of the main wing focus on the construction, iconography and use of the main staircase, the form and stylistic origins of the cour d'honneur, as well as the decoration and the later remodelling of the upper hall.

The other parts of the exhibition cover the history of the abbey and its baroque rebuilding, the role of the monastery as a pilgrimage site, and the significance of its buildings as an architectural stage for the display of relics. They also look into the current use of the ensemble as a site for the presentation of art and show how contemporary artists reflect on the act of showing and on the mise-en-scène of persons and objects. Moreover, the essential panels from the 2019 exhibition will still be on view in the south wing.

The exhibition is accessible during the usual opening hours of the kunsthaus. Admission is free.
