Martin Gjoleka wins Euregional Prize for Architecture (EAP) 2022
Congratulations! The Faculty of Architecture congratulates Martin Gjoleka with "Unzeitgemäße Betrachtungen" to 1st place and Bonnie Grön + Max Obermark with "Learning from Naples" as well as Mirela Spasova with "modi die essere" to the award of their master theses. The EAP is a prize awarded annually for the best graduation
projects of the five architecture schools in the Meuse-Rhine Euregion: Maastricht Academy
of Architecture, RWTH Aachen University, and University of Applied Sciences FH Aachen, as
well as the University of Hasselt and the University of Liège.
The jury's verdict:
'The first prize goes to a very different project. It is a work that needs a very close and extensive viewing. In the accompanying film, hyper-real images seduce us to take part in a hyper-controlled reality in which never-ending running tracks deviate from the spatial rule and distract by views, trees, steps, and other obstacles. It’s a dialogue between layers of realities and dis-realities. The jury interprets it as a work of deep reflection on our western civic society and a piece of time design that opens up the idea of what an architect can be and do. It wasn’t easy to grasp the entire content and total depth of the project since there are endless possibilities on how to read this design and film. Next to the original format of a precisely scripted and edited film, the jury appreciates the meta-level of the film, making the viewer critically think about what a civic space could or should look like. How do we
gather with our families? How do we come together as a city? With professionality and confidence in the medium of film and image making, the author presents extensive research and references in a book which is more than research; rather a script for the project which can be read in many ways. The jury praises this project for its brave and successful experimentation, in which poetics and criticality come together in a complete, meaningful work.'
